HaHu Books’ main project to date has been
Bukaya, a magazine in Amharic for children and families. Bukaya,
which means seedling in English, contains educational games, pictorial
stories, matching words to words, matching pictures to words, tales
and fables, tradition and culture, nursery rhymes, jokes and puzzles,
the complete Amharic alphabet and numbers. Bukaya provides Ethiopian
children and families with material which is entertaining and at
the same time educational. The material aims to be useful for all
ages including non-Ethiopians who are keen to develop their knowledge
of Amharic. Bukaya is designed in a way that inspires community
teachers, parents, language schools and guardians as to how to teach
Amharic language to children.
Two volumes, comprising 16 separate magazines, have been published.
The issues were all sold out. Because of continuing demand, however,
HaHu Books is making preparation to publish the collection in a
book format. We hope the publication will cater for new customers,
but also for community schools which used the magazines as instruction
material for Amharic language classes.
If you wish to get our advice on education, the preparation of own
language materials, translation of books and other materials, please
write to us or send us an email. Likewise the editors would also
be very happy to hear your views, comments and criticisms. We would
be very grateful if you can send to Bukaya contributions of stories,
nursery rhymes, jokes etc.. Don’t let language deter you from
making contributions. Send us your writings in any of the Ethiopian
languages as well as in English. We will try to get them translated
for you.

HaHu books no longer post a free sample copy of
Bukaya. However, there is a plan to publish all the contents of
the 16 issues in a book. If you are interested in the publication,
let us know your name and email or postal address. We will contact
you when it is available.
