Review
This Advanced Amharic-English dictionary is intended to be a supplement
to existing concise Amharic-English dictionaries by Wolf Leslau
and Amasalu Aklilu.
The two concise dictionaries serve the basic needs of bilingual
users up to secondary school level by providing only basic definitions
to some 15,000 words. This supplement is designed to complement
them with thousands of additional main and subordinate entries together
with fuller definitions in order to meet, the demands of advanced
users. The 400 page long dictionary is also packed with thousands
of contextual examples drawn from well known published and unpublished
sources. Transliteration and translation are provided for all these
examples, to highlight the nuances of the terms defined. It is an
essential companion for advanced students, translators and researchers
studying manuscripts and archival material in Amharic. Some unique
features of the dictionary include the orthography of entries based
on etymology, full references to frequently cited source materials,
and the inclusion of Arabic loan words used in the Amharic spoken
by Ethiopian Muslims.
